“My uncle lived on a houseboat on the Prinsengracht for many years and when I was a kid the pictures of people skating on the canals really captured my imagination.  When I moved to Amsterdam, one of the first things I bought for myself was a pair of ice skates, thinking this was an annual occurrence!  Finally 12 years later, after the original skates were broken, after I’d moved away from Amsterdam, after I’d got married and had two kids, finally the canals froze over and I was able to make a childhood dream come true!  I spent a very happy day on the canals where there was a warm and playful atmosphere, the Dutch showed their spontaneous side and races (for trophies), games of hockey and riverboat cafes-on-ice sprung up all over.  I took a million photos and am delighted to see a mix of the hockey game on what is unmistakeably one of old Amsterdam’s beautiful canals on lino print.”
